Lala Lala – Even Mountains Erode

Lala Lala drops “Even Mountains Erode” alongside the title track “Heaven2”, two new singles announcing her Sub Pop debut “Heaven 2” (February 27). After years on the label’s Hardly Art imprint, Lillie West is making the jump to the main roster with what sounds like her most considered work yet.

“Even Mountains Erode” builds off a shuffling trip-hop drum groove and powerful piano chords that give the track its melodic backbone. West’s warm, rounded vocals sit comfortably in the mix as she sings about being okay on your own: “There are symbols and signs, you’re missing your life. You’re under a threat that you can’t feel yet. And if you need to be free, I don’t see what you see. But I’m not opposed, even mountains erode.” It’s patient and reflective, unfolding with quiet gravity and letting the weight settle slowly.

The album was co-produced by West and Jay Som’s Melina Duterte, who brings a strong punchiness to the production. The two performed most of the instruments themselves, with crucial contributions from Sen Morimoto, Macie Stewart, and Porches’ Aaron Maine. Duterte’s touch is noticeable throughout, giving West’s intimate songwriting room to breathe while maintaining momentum.

West wrote “Heaven 2” during a period of constant movement. After establishing herself as an integral part of Chicago’s indie scene with “The Lamb” (2018) and “I Want the Door to Open” (2021), she left to search for something more. She landed off the grid in Taos, New Mexico, then spent two years bouncing between Iceland and London, where she grew up. During an Icelandic residency, she released the instrumental album “If I Were A Real Man I Would Be Able To Break The Neck Of A Suffering Bird” (2024).
